FORT WAYNE – The stage has been set for next Saturday’s semi-state wrestling tournament at the Coliseum, as regional tournaments throughout the area and state wrapped up Saturday evening. In the Fort Wayne area at Carroll High School, a number of local talents clinched their births at semi-state with dominating performances. Watch our video here.

There were four grapplers that entered the Carroll regional undefeated, and when the dust had settled Saturday evening, they still were among the state’s unbeatens. Bishop Luers’ Tony Lovejoy (119), Carroll’s Brock Norton (135), Garrett’s Zac McCray (160) and Concordia’s Korey Eck (285) all captured regional titles.

Lovejoy (38-0) recorded a pin and two decisions, including a 6-0 victory for the title. “It went all right,” the three-time regional champ Lovejoy said of his day. “I certainly did not wrestle my best, especially in the semi-finals when I only won by a point but had many missed scoring opportunities.”

While Lovejoy struggled somewhat, a few of them cruised through the tourney. Norton (31-0) dominated his weight class, recording a pin and two technical falls, including one in the championship. Norton, who was third in state last year said, “I am wrestling well, peaking at the right time. I am where I want to be at this time of the season.”

McCray (37-0) had two pins and won the championship match 4-2.

Eck (42-0) had two pins and won the championship by a 3-0 decision. “I am taking it one match at a time,” Eck said after his semi-final match. “Last season I did not get past semi-state, even though I had a solid year at 42-5. This is the last shot for me to get to state. Being a senior, it means so much more.”
