HUNTERTOWN — Carroll defeated DeKalb 54-40 in a Northeast Hoosier Conference matchup Saturday.
The Barons (4-11 overall, 2-4 NHC) played a strong first half and led 15-14 after one quarter. They stayed close with a patient approach in the second quarter before a critical momentum shift just before the half.
DeKalb held for the last shot, and missed an attempt from close range with three seconds left. Carroll’s Shane Merryman snagged the rebound and fired in a bomb from beyond half-court, giving the hosts a 23-17 advantage at intermission.
“That was a huge five-point swing,” Baron coach Jon Everingham said. “We have a chance to cut it to one, and they end up taking a six-point lead. They had the ball to start the second half.
“The first quarter, we did a nice job of sharing the basketball and we hit some shots.”
Carroll hit four threes to widen the gap in the third quarter, and Alex Hipskind scored another buzzer basket as the Chargers led 36-22 at the last stop.
“We came out in the third quarter absolutely flat,” Everingham said. “We lost focus on a couple plays, and there were some loose balls we didn’t grab.”
Ryan Boester had 13 points to lead the Barons, and Adison Daub and Jared Forrest each added nine. DeKalb hit 48 percent from the field (15-of-31) compared to 60 percent for Carroll (15-of-25).
Stephen Jones led Carroll (14-2, 5-1) with 16 points in its 11th straight win. Tyler Ault hit four threes and finished with 15, and Merryman wound up with 13.
“It just came down to a few possessions here and there,” Everingham said. “Overall, we made big strides in this game. We played solid defense.”
Carroll won the JV game 36-18. DeKalb defeated the Chargers in the freshman game.
