FORT WAYNE – The Bishop Luers Lady Knights came oh so close, but in the end, fell in the Class 2A State Girl’s Basketball Title Game 70-65 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
Luers jumped out to a 14-10 first quarter advantage, but then watched Austin comeback to take the lead at the break 29-26. Austin continued its hot-hand shooting in the third stanza, out-pointing Luers 20-14 in the third quarter to increase their lead to nine-points at 49-40.
Luers displayed some grit and determination, which has carried the Lady Knights through much of the season and especially the tournament, by ending the game on a 19-10 run to send it to an extra period. In fact, Luers had the game in hand until Austin canned a three point play to knot the score.
In the overtime though, Austin bolted to a quick lead by canning their first two buckets. Luers never recovered though and was out-pointed 11-6 in the OT.
Bishop Luers, who have won the state title in girl’s basketball five times, was led by center Miracle Woods, who scored 12 of her team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter. Woods completed a double-double, as she grabbed 12 rebounds also.
“A win would have been great, but I don’t think any less of these kids or feel any less about them,” Luers coach Denny Renier said.
